Honor Your Mother

Honor Your Mother

Sunday, May 13, 2018 – Pastor George M. Dupree

Ephesians 6:2 Honor your father and mother. This is the first of the Ten Commandments that ends with a promise. 3 And this is the promise: If you honor your father and mother, you will live a long life, full of blessing.

If you will honor you Mother things will go well for you and you’ll have a long life.

There are three stages of a mother child relationship.

1 – As a Child we learn to obey.

Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents; this is the right thing to do because God has placed them in authority over you.

2 – As a Teenager we learn to respect

Leviticus 19:3 Every one of you must respect his mother…

Hebrews 12:9 We respect our own parents for training and not spoiling us, so why not embrace God’s training so we can truly live?

One way we respect is to talk and listen respectfully.

Proverbs 13:1 Intelligent children listen to their parents; foolish children do their own thing.

.

When you listen respectfully you’ll learn some things

Proverbs 6:20 … never forget what your mother taught you. 21 Keep their words with you always, locked in your heart.

3 – Adulthood is where we learn how to appreciate

Proverbs 23:22b When your mother is old, show her your appreciation.

Appreciate her efforts – parenting is hard

Think about how much easier her life would’ve been without you.

Thank and appreciate your mom for putting up with you

Appreciate her sacrifice – Parenting is expensive.

According to the Department of Agriculture for a middle-income family of four the estimated cost of raising a child from birth through age 17 is $233thousand dollars.

Choosing to become a parent is an expensive decision.

Proverbs 23:25b May she who gave you birth be happy.

As a whole, western culture does not respect the elderly like many other non-western cultures. Oftentimes western cultures use much of their resources on the young and forget the elderly.

Jesus only said a few things on the cross and one of those things was said to his friend John when He told him to care for His mother, Mary.

God gives a very stern a very warning about caring for family

1 Timothy 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Remember your mother and tell her that you appreciate and love her.

Call her, write to her, and take some time to be with her.

She may not be able to do everything she used to be able to do but she’s a human being not a human doing.

When you need someone to pray for you ask her.
