There is often a contradiction between our new identity in Christ and how we think and feel about ourselves, this affects the way we live, it affects our emotions. These emotions don’t need to be removed; they need to be reshaped. God wants to renew our mind by the Word of God. When you know the Word of God you can fight against the contradictions that come to you.   Contra means against – Diction means something spoken   A contradiction comes against what has been spoken. Often we’ll have thoughts that are contrary to what God says and in those times we can choose what we’ll believe.   Here are some things that often affect what we believe about ourselves

  • What people say about us
  • What we do
  • Where we were born
  • What we’ve done

Our emotions respond to what we are thinking. What do you think of yourself? What do you say about yourself? What Does God Say About You? What’s important is who you are IN Christ.   This is what you can say about yourself as a believer in Christ   I am God’s child. John 1:12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,   I am Jesus’ friend. John 15:15 No longer do I call you servants…but I have called you friends… I am a new person in Christ 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. The Holy Spirit lives in me 1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.   I am a masterpiece Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so that we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.   I am totally and completely forgiven. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I am alive in Christ. Ephesians 2:5 Even when we were dead in our trespasses, [God] made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved… I am loved by God Romans 5:8 But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.   Do any of these phrases match your thoughts about yourself?

  • I am unloved and un-loveable.
  • I am not good enough, I feel inadequate.
  • I am a fearful and anxious person.
  • I am a disappointment.
  • I am not very smart. I am not special or important.
  • I am worthless and don’t deserve anything.
  • I am a sinner and can’t be forgiven.
  • I am unwanted and don’t belong.
  • I feel condemned.
  • I have no plan or purpose for my life.

Here Are Some Truths That You Can Say About Yourself

  • I am not who others say I am, I am what God says I am.
  • I am not what I do – I’m a human being not a human doing
  • I am not what I did – I’m forgiven and I’m a new creation
  • The truth about me is always what God says!

If you think that you don’t fit in – YOU BECOME A CONFORMER – you will try to conform to what others want of you or what you think will make them accept you.

  • 1 Samuel 15:24 I was afraid of the people and so I gave in to them.

If you think that you’re not good enough – YOU BECOME A PERFORMER – You’ll try to do things to make people accept you.

  • Luke 10:40 Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.

YOU NEED TO KNOW WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST – LET’S DECLARE IT In Christ I Am Accepted

  • Ephesians 1:6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.

In Christ I Am Brand New

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

In Christ I Am Complete

  • Colossians 2:10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

In Christ I Am Free

  • John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

  • Romans 8:1 There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

This is what God said about Jesus Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”   This is what the devil said to Jesus Luke 4:3 and the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread. 4 But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ ”   This is what Jesus said and did Luke 4:16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:   18 The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” 20 Then HE CLOSED THE BOOK, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down.   SAY WHAT GOD SAYS AND CLOSE THE BOOK
